Application:
Choline chloride is an organic compound and a quaternary ammonium salt. It has a choline cation with a chloride anion.
In oilfield applications, choline chloride is primarily used as a clay stabilizer-a chemical additive used in stimulation treatments to prevent the migration or swelling of clay particles in reaction to water-base fluid.
Choline chloride is also referred to as a KCL substitute as it has replaced the use of potassium chloride.
Choline chloride has gained widespread acceptance in stimulation operations as it is an environmentally friendly organic salt. It has replaced more hazardous products like TMAC.
Choline chloride can also be used in drilling applications. Primary uses are for wellbore stability and shale inhibition.
